Merrill-Buckner papers, 1787-1870 (bulk 1830-1860).

Collection primarily consists of financial and legal papers of Merrill, Buckner, and Ferguson. The majority of Merrill's papers include note protestations of the Agricultural Bank of Natchez, signed by him. Also present is a journal (1834-1837) for the firm Buckner, Stanton, and Company. The Ferguson papers include accounts with merchants and with doctors for the care of both family and slaves; drafts and promissory notes on behalf of Jane from David Hunt and Joseph Dunbar; letters and accounts with cotton merchants. The few personal papers include letters Jane and Margaret received from George and Charlotte, describing life in New York. The Buckner materials are comprised of documents that reflect his law, planting, and factoring activities. Included are judgments, payments, correspondence, and depositions for Buckner, Barrow, and Stuart; letters and accounts relating to the sale of Aylett Buckner's cotton crop through Buckner and Stanton, Buckner and Hunsicker, and others; bill of sale for slaves purchased by Buckner and Hunsicker; and his accounts with merchants. Miscellaneous items include plats of the property of Abner Green, a map of an unidentified area, probably around Natchez, labeled squares 20-37 and showing property ownership, and the deed to Patesi Plantation and its slaves to settle the debt of the Commercial Bank of Manchester, Yazoo City, Miss.
